LASIK is the most commonly performed refractive surgery procedure. LASIK is actually short for “laser assisted in situkeratomileusis.” Lasik has advantages over other procedures, including a relative lack of pain afterward and the fact that improved vision is usually noticeable by the very next day.

A good candidate for refractive surgery must be at least 18 years old and have a prescription that falls within the scope of correction. Good candidates should meet the following criteria:

  • Have a stable prescription
  • Free of eye disease such as cataracts or glaucoma
  • Free of eye viruses and in good general health with no autoimmune or collagen vascular disease
  • Not be on any medication which makes you immunocompromised
  • Not be pregnant or nursing
